Letesenbet Giday, Goteytom Gebreselasea, and Gudaf Tsegay who raced for 10KM, Marathon and 5KM respectively swiped three Golds from the championship. Those three athletes, like other Tegarus outside of Tigray, didn’t meet or talk their family for several months because of the genocidal war and succeeding siege on Tigray by the Government of Ethiopia and Eritrea.
Against all the odds Gudaf went through to take part in the game, in addition to the 5000 M’s title, shewas also a Sliver Medal winner for the 1500 meters race. She said, the team work with Letesenbet Giday and Dawit Seyoum have helped them all to control the track and perform well in the last sprint. Gudaf took the advantage of her tough training for 1500 meters to spring forward on the final lap. Her winning spirit was there as she was setting the race from the kickoff. World Olympic bronze medallist Gudaf Tsegay runs 14:46.29 to strike world 5000m title!
World Athletics Championship Oregon 2022 was eventful because of Tigray Diaspora Community Seattle Area, Oregon and suburbs have supported their athletes and protested against the siege on Tigray by the brutal Ethiopian Government. They were able to grab the attention of mainstream media with the way Meareg, one of the protesters, stormed into the track wearing Tigray flag to hug Gudaf and Letesenbet to express his appreciation for their excellent job and be voice to the voiceless people at home.
