Lekatit 11

Kalayu Abraha

Attending college classes,

Scoring As and Bs.

So happy, so young,

Dreaming of something big.

Doctors in hospitals, attorneys in courts;

Teachers in schools, engineers building roads.

These were my friends, so were my comrades,

For people’s freedom they traded their lives.

From the Metropolis, a zone of comfort;

They marched happily to the village of Dedebit.

They ended an Era, years of slavery;

Centuries of oppression, epochs of quandary.

RIP the brilliant, the handsome, and the brave,

Will never forget your sacrifice until the grave.

Now What?

Let Lekatit mark the year, the future begins;

In which Tigray emerges and Tigray continues.

Its troubles over, its miseries ended;

Bright sun shines and the darkness removed.

New philosophy, a new economy, and a new society;

Holding dear in our minds, the Axumite glory.

Polish the gold coins the Ezanas minted,

Restore the vibrancy our ancestors traded.

Forget the wilderness Tigray was thrown,

Like the dust from the north blown,

Always below always down.

Stay there but don’t live,

Earn there but don’t give,

Swim there but don’t dive.

Always

Think of a homeland, think of a Nation;

Wherever you dwell, you can call your own.

I am a Gipsy, I am stateless;

In the places I live, I am just rootless.

God! Give me mine, give me home,

As a nomad a thousand years gone!
